I want to learn to speak Italian. My plan is to graduate high school, get my bachelors degree, go to southern Italy for the Peace Corps, come back to the U.S, get my masters, and then go back to Italy to be an english teacher on an Italian military base. Obviously, it would be easier if I could speak Italian. I looked at Rosetta Stone, but it’s really expensive. What is a cheaper way to learn? Thanks!!!

Why do you specifically want Rosetta Stone? As a beginner, learning vocabulary is not the best approach. Rosetta Stone like other flashcard based methods, helps expand your vocabulary base but they will not teach you conversational skills. Knowing many words is not knowing to speak a language. I usually recommend Pimsleur to beginner students. If you want a method that focuses on conversational skills, Pimsleur is the reference imo. It’s a real confidence builder, which is essential for new students. You will learn to train your ear to understand natives, develop very good pronunciation and get the fundamentals of the language under your belt. It’s also half the price of RS (check Amazon.) BYKI is an alternative to Rosetta Stone but it suffers from the same problem for a beginner. It’s a flashcard teaching method and can help increase vocabulary knowledge but will not teach you to speak or understand natives. Good luck.
