Why Should Anyone Learn The Hard Way?

Mankind believes in taking the line of least resistance. Though this attitude is  usually   scorned , it is the very one  that allowed us to come out of the caverns , millennia ago.
It is easy to imagine that  one of our forefathers  figured out that keeping the hen within his reach would make egg hunt parties far less haphasard and less tiring at the same time. It is hard to believe that he would have provided a shelter for a hen had he not thought it would make things easier for him. Another ascendant ï»¿fancied that to breed animals would be easier  ï»¿than to hunt them, or that it required less efforts to grow cereals than to migrate regularly, etc.
Without our natural tendency ï»¿towards laziness, we would still be living in caves -and dying at 30, for the luckier. Providentially , human beings  ï»¿ never stop ï»¿ looking for the easiest way to get rid of tasks, in order to save our energy  for what ï»¿we have a liking for .

In  the present   world, our houses are seldom excavated, but we still are the same beings, saving our energy  as much as possible.
Except for some “language wackos ” nobody  learns a foreign language with the sole intention of  of  training   their mind. Most students choose  a foreign   language because it is mandatory. Many adult learners do not choose a specific language but try to meet some job requirements.
Is language learning an exception?  Is there any domain of knowledge that everyone and their brothers want to study in depth out of intellectual curiosity? No. Human beings  tend to learn what they know  they are good at .

Were it not   for born musicians, who would ever study music without their parents, or their schools, obliging them to?
Only “garden nutters ” toil  for years to create a new flower.
In fact, geeks of all kinds always look peculiar, to keep it smooth , to those who do not share  their boundless enthusiasm . On the other hand, parents fond of mathematics cannot   understand why other parents think their small  daughter is strange   because she  likes to spend   her free  time resolving equations.
Today, only hunters are willing to get up at 4   for a shooting party; most  people prefer to stay in bed, and they do so as much as possible.
All over the world, the decrease of  the number of working hours is thought  to be a progressive step, despite the “sin” of laziness that some expose.

But it takes more than laziness to define  the mankind. Human beings like success, and naturally go for what will give them the best chance of shining. The longing to stand out, be it in front of a large audience or a lover’s eyes, gives an helping hand to a natural gift and may urge to work even the most languid person. It is amazing   how many hours the laziest student  is ready to   devote to a project that does not pertain to the official syllabus.

There is something slightly different with languages, when compared with other exercises: each one of us has already proven his ability to learn a language, and to learn it thoroughly. This first success  is part of the problem. We learned  it so easily -the truth is that we do not remember how difficult it was- that we cannot resign ourselves to do it all over again the hard way.

Since recently , the language student may take advantage of  the newest  language learning method   that eases the learning process. Bilingual audiobooks make learning easy. The student does not even know that he is learning. One day, he knows what he did not know the day before.
In these circumstances , it is not surprizing that, when it comes to language learning software, bilingual audiobooks  are becoming  the first  tools even in the staff room.
